GlowGuard: Keep Your Lighting Looking Like Day One

Our annual outdoor lighting maintenance program — for Light Up Columbus installations and systems you inherited from someone else.

Why Maintenance Matters

Outdoor lighting systems aren't fire-and-forget. Even the best installation needs attention over time. Plants grow and block fixtures. Wind and weather shift aim. Transformers wear. Bulbs eventually fail. Wiring connections corrode if installed poorly.

Catching all of this early — and addressing it before it becomes a system-wide failure — is what GlowGuard does.

Three Paths for Existing Systems

Did you buy a home with outdoor lighting already installed? Or had a system installed years ago by a company that's since disappeared or stopped servicing you? You're not alone — about 30% of our GlowGuard signups come from properties where someone else did the original install.
We start every inherited-system relationship with a free assessment.

From there, the right path depends on what we find:

Path 1

Restore

If the existing system is sound but tired, restoration is usually the right call. We clean every fixture, replace failing bulbs, re-aim everything, refresh wire connections, and bring it back to working order. From there, GlowGuard keeps it that way. Typical investment: $400-$1,500.

Path 2

Enhance

If the system works but doesn't fully serve the property — missing fixtures, dated technology, or design gaps — enhancement is a hybrid. We restore what's working, then add new fixtures, new techniques, or new technology to bring the system up to current standards. Typical investment: $1,500-$5,000.

Path 3

Replace

If the existing system is failing structurally — corroded wire, dead transformers, fixtures past their useful life — replacement is the honest answer. We design a new system using the existing footprint where possible, and install it like any new project. Typical investment: full landscape lighting range ($3,500-$40,000+).

For New Homeowners

Bought a home with outdoor lighting that the previous owner had professionally installed? Common situation, and one we handle frequently.

The free assessment will tell you what you've inherited — quality of the install, age of the system, what's still under warranty, what we'd recommend going forward. Then you decide what to do with the information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does GlowGuard cost?

TBD

How long does each maintenance visit take?

Most residential maintenance visits take 1-3 hours, depending on the size of the system and what needs attention. We schedule visits during daylight for inspection and adjustment work, with optional after-dark verification for systems where the night aim is critical.

What if my lighting system was installed by someone else?

That's most of our GlowGuard signups, actually. We start with a free assessment and then propose the right path — restore, enhance, or replace. We service inherited systems from any installer, not just our own work.

Why is my landscape lighting timer not working?

Several common causes: dead batteries in the timer's clock memory, photocell sensor obstructed by dirt or vegetation, programming reset after a power outage, or transformer failure. Most are quick fixes — but if the timer keeps failing after a fix, it's usually a sign of underlying transformer wear that needs professional assessment. GlowGuard catches this before it becomes a system-wide failure.

How do I reset my landscape lighting transformer?

Most landscape lighting transformers have a small reset button or breaker on the unit itself. The process: turn off power at the breaker, wait 30 seconds, press and hold the transformer's reset button for 5-10 seconds, restore power. If the system doesn't come back, or if it works briefly and trips again, that's a sign of a deeper issue — often a short in the wire run or a transformer near end-of-life. Call us before troubleshooting further.

Why are some of my outdoor lights brighter than others?

Most common cause: voltage drop along long wire runs. Lights farther from the transformer receive less voltage and appear dimmer. This is usually a design issue — the original installer didn't size the transformer correctly or didn't loop the wire run properly. The fix involves rebalancing the system, sometimes adding a second transformer, and replacing any aging bulbs. GlowGuard catches this and we resolve it during a visit.

What does it cost to replace a landscape lighting transformer?

Replacement transformers run $300-$1,200 depending on capacity and quality (we use commercial-grade transformers built for long-term durability). Installation labor is typically $200-$500. Total replacement: usually $500-$1,700. If your transformer is failing, it's worth asking us to inspect the full system at the same time — the cause is usually upstream.

Why are my outdoor lights flickering?

Flickering is usually one of three things: (1) a failing transformer, (2) a corroded wire connection, or (3) an LED bulb incompatible with the transformer's output. All three are diagnosable in a single visit. Don't ignore it — flickering systems typically progress to outright failure within months.

Do you offer one-time service calls, or only GlowGuard?

Both. One-time service calls for emergency or one-off issues. GlowGuard for ongoing care. Most people start with a service call and enroll in GlowGuard once they see the value.

Will GlowGuard cover my Gemstone Lights system?

Gemstone systems have manufacturer-backed warranties that cover most hardware issues. GlowGuard's role with Gemstone is checking on app/firmware updates, addressing physical fixture issues (rare), and managing any installation-related maintenance. Often included in our Gemstone install packages.

How do I know if my outdoor lighting needs maintenance?

Common signs: some fixtures noticeably dimmer than others, bulbs that keep burning out, lights coming on at the wrong time, fixtures aimed where they don't belong, plant growth obscuring lights, or visible wire above ground. If you're seeing any of these, schedule a free assessment.

Free assessment. No commitment.

Whether your system was installed by us in 2009 or by someone else last summer — start with an assessment. We'll tell you what you have, what it needs, and what the right next step is.
