What Permanent Roofline Lighting Is

Tiny LED fixtures installed below the soffit of your home, each independently controllable from an app on your phone.

In their default state, they disappear — a single white channel of light that sits flush against the roofline like trim. Most visitors don't realize they're there. From dusk to midnight, they cast a soft sconce-like glow that highlights the architecture of your home in a way nothing else can.

And then, when you want them to, they can do everything else. Full-color holiday displays you turn on the day after Thanksgiving and off on New Year's Day — without anyone climbing a ladder. Team colors on game day. Soft pink for a birthday. Subtle accent lighting for an evening party. All from the app.

Same lights. Same install. Twelve months a year.

Why Gemstone, and Why Us

Light Up Columbus is an authorized Gemstone Lights dealer. We chose Gemstone after years of evaluating permanent lighting systems on real properties — yours and others. The hardware, the app, the durability, and the install method all check out. Most don't.

But the product is only half the equation. The other half is the install.

A Gemstone system installed by an inexperienced crew looks fine the day they finish. Three years in, it tells on itself: visible wiring, uneven spacing, fixtures pulling away from the fascia. We see this in homes our team gets called to fix after another company finished the install.

Our crews are trained specifically on Gemstone hardware. Every installation passes a checklist before it's finished. And every install we do is backed by both Gemstone's manufacturer warranty and Light Up Columbus's own workmanship warranty.

What People Actually Use It For

gemstone-2
  • Christmas and Holiday

The original sales pitch and still the most common use. Skip the ladder, the broken bulbs, the storage, the November weekend lost to install. One tap on the app on November 24th, another tap on January 2nd. Done.

  • Daily accent lighting

Most clients leave the system on warm white from dusk to 11pm or midnight, year-round. The home holds its presence on the street, the entry is more welcoming, and the architecture looks finished after dark.

  • Game day, holidays, occasions

Buckeye scarlet and gray on football Saturdays. Orange for Halloween. Red, white, and blue for the Fourth. Pink for a birthday. The system has presets for all of it.

  • Subtle event lighting

When you're hosting outdoors — backyard dinner, anniversary party, graduation — the system creates instant evening ambiance without anyone running an extension cord or hanging a string.

How the Project Works

Consultation

Some companies email a quote without ever bothering to se your home in person. We do things a little differently. A Light Up Columbus designer comes to your property, meet you in person, and discuss the best ways we can help.

MEASURE / DISCERN

The LUC Designer will measure your soffits, inspect attic access, and discern the challanging technical aspects to your installation. A simple roofline is easier than complicated angles, trim, or doormers, and that should be reflected in the cost of the work.

Installation

Our own crews — never subcontractors — install every track, every wire, every transformer. Most residential projects complete in 1-2 days. We really stand out for our ability to make transitions and jumps cleanly. You should barely see your lights during the day.

APP TRAINING

Once the installation is complete, your lead tech will help you download the app and learn how to control your lighting. This is when the fun begins and you get to experiment with over 1300 different preset patterns and colors!

JEALOUS NEIGHBORS

It is inevitable..... If your house is the only one in the neighborhood with Gemstone Lights, your neighbors are going to get jealous. They will instantly regret their attempt to save a few bucks using govee or a generic brand. The good news is you can refer them to LUC and we will help bring joy to their lives as well.

Investment Range

Permanent roofline lighting projects with Light Up Columbus typically range from $5,500 to $18,000, depending on the size of the home and the linear footage of roofline being lit.

The cost is roughly equivalent to 4-6 years of professional holiday light installations — but the system runs for 10-15 years and does everything else the rest of the year.

Compare Before You Buy

Permanent Roofline

If you are comparing permanent lighting systems, you are really comparing three things: the product, the installer, and what happens after the crew leaves.

The product: Gemstone is engineered for permanent exterior use with individually serviceable, app-controlled LEDs. Generic strip systems fade, fail in sections, and rarely survive Ohio weather.

The installer: color-matched channel, concealed wiring, and clean electrical work take training and patience. Ask every bidder for daytime photos of their three most recent installs.

The after: LUC sets up your scenes, warranties the work, and services what we install. If a diode ever misbehaves, you call us, not a manufacturer overseas.

Holiday looks without ladders, security lighting without spotlights, and one app for all of it. We are happy to walk you through a comparison against any quote you are holding.

Where We Install

We install permanent roofline lighting on homes across Central Ohio — Columbus, Dublin, Upper Arlington, Bexley, New Albany, Westerville, Worthington, Hilliard, Gahanna, Powell, Plain City, Granville, and beyond.

Single-story ranch homes to multi-story estates. Whatever the architecture, the design and install process is the same — every home is measured and laid out individually.

What should you ask before choosing a permanent lighting professional?

Permanent lighting lives on your home year round, so the company and product you choose matter more than the price on the quote. These are the questions we would ask anyone bidding on your home, including us.

How long have you been installing lighting?

Light Up Columbus has been lighting Central Ohio for more than 20 years. Permanent roofline lighting has exploded in popularity, which means many of the companies offering it are brand new to lighting and still learning the details that make an installation last. Ask for the year any bidder started installing lighting, not the year they added it to a brochure.

Do you specialize in lighting?

The name says it all. Lighting is everything we do, every day, and all we have done for two decades. We don't clean windows, install irrigation, or power wash patios. Many companies added permanent lighting as a side offering to fill their slow season. There is nothing wrong with that, but a system that lives on your roofline deserves a crew that lives in this work.

What brand do you install, and why?

We install Gemstone Lights, the proven leader in permanent lighting, and we are proud to be Central Ohio's verified Gemstone installer. One caution as you compare: some installers offer generic product imported directly from overseas marketplaces and describe it as equivalent to the name brands. It is not, and the differences show up in the app, the warranty, and year two on your roofline. DIY brands like the ones at the hardware store are real products too, and a fine way to experiment on a budget. They are simply not professional systems.

What warranty stands behind the product?

Gemstone provides a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on the lights themselves (rated 50,000+ hours) and a 10-year warranty on all other parts, backed by a company that has been growing for over a decade. That last part matters most: a warranty is only as strong as the company standing behind it. Generic imported systems typically carry no manufacturer's warranty at all; if the installer stops answering the phone, there is no one left to call. DIY brands usually offer around three years from purchase. Get every warranty in writing, including who performs the labor.

Is the system UL Listed, and why does that matter?

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is the independent organization that tests electrical products against nationally recognized safety standards. Because permanent lighting is wired to your home year round, this is not fine print. The complete Gemstone system, not just individual parts, has been independently tested and certified. Many generic systems skip certification entirely, whatever their marketing claims, and even well-known DIY products are often only component-listed rather than certified as a full installed system. Ask every bidder this question and ask for documentation.

Would insurance cover electrical damage from a permanent lighting system?

Every policy and every claim is different, so ask your insurer. What we can tell you: after an electrical loss, inspectors and insurance investigators look at whether the system was independently safety-certified and professionally installed to the manufacturer's standards. A UL Listed system installed by a professional gives you documentation and accountability. An uncertified system installed by a handyman gives you neither. In 20 years, we have never had an insurance claim on our work.

How many patterns, animations, and colors are built in?

As of July 2026, Gemstone offers more than 1,350 preprogrammed patterns, animations, and color combinations, with new ones added weekly by full-time developers, and you can customize every individual pixel to build your own show. Most competing systems offer roughly a hundred presets. Ask for the number, then ask to see the app.

Who builds and supports the app?

The app is the part of the system you will actually touch every day, so this question matters more than most people expect. The Gemstone Lights app is proprietary, built and continuously improved by Gemstone's own software team, and holds a 4.9-star rating with more than 3,800 reviews on the Apple App Store. Generic systems rely on white-labeled, third-party apps that the local installer has no ability to fix or improve. Before you sign anything, look up the app rating of the system you are being sold. It is the most honest review of daily life with the product.

Will I see the system during the day?

You shouldn't. Gemstone offers more than 30 track profiles to fit different rooflines and over 150 soffit and fascia colors, which is why our installations are virtually invisible in daylight. Systems with a handful of track options get mounted and color-matched approximately. DIY systems often skip track entirely and rely on adhesive, which fails over time and leaves wires exposed either way.

What does your installation process look like?

Ours is the cleanest, most technical installation in the Midwest, and we are happy to prove it with daytime photos of our three most recent installs. Wherever possible we run wiring through the attic so the system disappears completely. Ask every bidder how they route wire, how they handle gaps and transitions, and whether their track actually matches your home. Shortcuts here are exactly where discount installations announce themselves.

Ask us all ten. Ask everyone else too. Then decide. Call 614-832-3139 or request a quote, and we'll bring the answers and the daytime photos.

Want To See It On Your House?
